Offshore/On Board - Surf Art Reconsidered, Mario Novak Gallery, May 2006
The movement of the drawing hand echoes the rhythms of wave, the water
and pigment flow and pool as the water's edge pulls the sand. These
dark marks on the blank page stand as the black figures against
bleaching sunlight dot the beach. The heroic stance of the surfer
follows the pose of egyptian prince, greek kouros or existential poet.
The power of nature as it rises through the ocean challenges the
strength and determination of youth. Just as the surfer is engaged on
the very edge, so the force of line brings a drawing into existence in
an instant with the rush of the unknown and the hope of knowing.
